DIY Green Cleaners: Vinegar

Today we are going to take a look at a few simple recipes for cleaning. The idea here is to make your own cleaning products using non-toxic materials that will leave your surfaces clean and fresh.

From personal experience, I can vouch for using vinegar as a cleaning agent. Many people are afraid of the smell but with the following cleaning recipes, you don’t use much vinegar at all. And if you want to experiment with straight vinegar you can as the strong smell will dissipate quickly.

  • All Purpose: Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup baking soda in 2 liters of water
  • Window Cleaner: Mix 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water
  • Paste Cleaner: Mix 2 tablespoons salt and 1 table spoon vinegar
  • Metal Cleaner: Mix 2 tablespoons Cream of Tartar and add in enough vinegar to create a paste

Tomorrow, we’ll get back into Green Thanksgiving and take a look at some eco-friendly ways to decorate for the holiday with the least amount of impact possible…think upcycle.  Upcycle is the key word for tomorrow’s posting.

Part of the squash family, this orange gourd vegetable can be a health contributor beyond the standard holiday pumpkin pies that become popular around this time of year. Filled with a high level of vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium, zinc and unsaturated fatty acids, adding pumpkins to your diet can help to prevent prostrate problems, hardening of the arteries and irritable bowel syndrome. 5 Simple Ways to Have a Green Halloween

Halloween will soon be here and there really are ways to make this celebration a green one.  Here we take a look at 5 simple ways that you can make this spooky holiday healthier for your family and the environment.

  • Buy your pumpkins, gourds, apples and other seasonal items from a local  farmer’s market.
  • Save pumpkin seeds after carving and bake them. Pumpkin seeds are a healthy snack, plus you can help feed the local birds with the seeds that don’t get eaten in the house.
  • Make your own costume or purchase a costume from the local thrift store. Also, donate those old costumes to a local children’s shelter or foster home to help more kids have a fun holiday.
  • Pass out organic and fair trade candies. These can be picked up at your local whole foods, Trader Vic;s or other health food store.
  • Use recyclable bags for collecting candy. Better yet, take some old canvas bags from around the house and decorate them with a Halloween theme. Even old pillowcases can garner new life with some imagination.
